Heartcuts
Heartcutting is selectively sending aliquots of GC effluent separated in a pre-column (usually DB5 or equivalent) to a second column with different stationary phase (usually a wax). This method, called heart cutting, allows for increased separation and detection of trace level components. Heartcuts are helpful in ascertaining identities of components from complex samples such as coffee and tobacco smoke.
